The Reverend Jesse Jackson and the Reverend Al Sharpton often dwell on advocating liberal political positions, which they believe will help benefit society. The Reverend A.R. Bernard, however, while he does call those two men his friends, is one African American pastor who is more concerned with standing in the world for Biblical values than spreading a political social agenda. At the same time, he is also a civil rights leader, as is the Reverend Jackson, and is also an economic strategist. The Reverend Bernard is also recognized as one of the most important religious leaders in the United States and is pastor of the largest church in New York City-the Christian Cultural Center, which is also one of the fastest growing churches in the United States. The Reverend Bernard was once a member of the Nation of Islam, under Elijah Mohamed, before he found a faith in Jesus Christ. Although the Reverend Bernard has been recognized as one of the leading African American pastors in the United States and has been honored by Presidents and United States Senators for his accomplishments, he still believes his primary mission in life is to share Christ with the world. He was recognized by New York Magazine as one of "the most influential New Yorkers;" was listed in the New York Daily News, as the result of the opinions of group of organizations as number one religious leader in New York, and was given a lifetime achievement award by the Consulate General of Israel in New York, the Jewish Community Relations Council, and the Jewish National Fund. His church has grown to more than 28,000 members and is located on an 11-acre campus. While he is recognized for his faith, the Reverend Bernard as drawn on his background in financial services and is sought as a speaker for Fortune 500 companies, universities, colleges, and faith-based organizations. He has shared the message of a life changing experience with God. The Reverend Bernard is the founder of the Brooklyn Preparatory in New York City, which serves children from 3-6. The Reverend Bernard is the host of two national television shows on TBN and various radio broadcasts. The Reverend Bernard has shown that he is not only a leading African American pastor but also an economic strategist. He is a member Board of Directors of the New York City Economic Development Corporation ("EDC") and Chancellor Joel Klein's Cabinet of the New York City Department of Education. The Reverend A. R. Bernard as served as a member of the NYC Police Department Advisory Board for Courtesy, Professionalism and Respect. In addition, Bernard served on Mayor Michael Bloomberg's 2001 Transition Team of the City of New York. He received a Masters Degree in Divinity from Alliance Seminary, Nyack College. The Reverend Bernard was a part of the desegregation movement of public schools when he was a child. While he was attending school he worked in a garment district pushing racks for $2 an hour to help his mother. He worked in the banking world from the time he was a senior in high school until he felt called to full-time Christian work. In the meantime he had developed a faith that Christ was the answer for his life and for the world after hearing an evangelist named Nicky Cruz preach. The Reverend Bernard's church started with a small Bible study in a kitchen. He and his wife, Karen, took their small savings and rented a small storefront in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn. His ministry grew, and so did the need for a larger facility. An abandoned supermarket was purchased and was renovated into a 1000 seat sanctuary, with a bookstore and ministry offices. At the time the church moved into its new location, it had 625 members. The church continued to grow, and with four services at capacity and overflow rooms full, another facility was purchased. The church took its current name and moved into the new home, which included a 6.5 acre sanctuary, and a conference center that includes a café, flower shop, newsstand, and restaurant. An additional 4.5 acres was purchased for a 500-seat center for the performing arts, a botanical garden, a youth sports complex, senior housing, and other community development projects. The Reverend A.R. Bernard, one leading African American Pastor who is more concerned with the Bible than politics, seeks for his church to share faith in Jesus Christ through a food pantry, a prison ministry, a ministry to substance abusers, and a bookstore that serves members and Christian ministries throughout the world with Bibles, books, recordings, videos, and gifts. The Reverend Bernard has also served men through the Christian Men's Network, as a member of the Board of Directors, then as Treasurer, then as President. The organization has offices in 150 nations and has 74 international offices. He has been one of the most requested speakers for the Network. He has traveled throughout the United States, Asia, Africa, Australia, and Europe, addressing religious organizations, businessmen and political dignitaries. As a leading African American pastor, the Reverend A.R. Bernard is also involved in education. He opened the Brooklyn Preparatory School in 1993. In June 1999 first graders at the school ranked in the 91st percentile reading and in the 96th percentile in math. The Reverend Bernard also founded, along with a number of ministers and not-for-profit representatives, founded Christian Renaissance Corporation to help establish urban revitalization. The organization was involved in a memorial service in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The service was broadcast to churches across the country and to Latin America. "My desire is to effect change within society by representing the biblical worldview and the biblical value system," the leader among African American pastors said. He sees his faith as a lifestyle, not only a belief system in God. While some African American religious leaders, like the Reverend Jesse Jackson and the Reverend Al Sharpton often dwell on politics, the Reverend Jackson is one pastor who is more concerned with seeing people come to a faith in Jesus Christ. He believes that when a person genuinely becomes a Christian, he returns to the original purpose of God for man, before the first man fell into sin. He said he wants people "empowered" by having God in their lives. . |
